Delta Airlines Reservations: Phone Numbers, Fees & Booking Shortcuts

Booking a Delta flight is quickest on delta.com or the Fly Delta app, but the reservations line is 800-221-1212 and it runs 24/7. There’s no separate surcharge for calling to book a regular Delta ticket — unlike the ultra-low-cost carriers — so if you need a human, you can actually use one without a fee penalty. Save the phone for what it’s good for: multi-city award tickets on SkyTeam partners, last-minute SkyMiles bookings, accessibility requests, or tickets the website refuses to price correctly.

The A350 is Delta’s long-haul workhorse — the one you’ll end up on for most flights to Tokyo, Seoul, and Johannesburg. Worth knowing if you’re booking a premium cabin.

The numbers that matter

The general reservations line is 800-221-1212, open 24 hours a day. Delta publishes this as its main contact for new bookings and changes to existing ones. You’ll be asked whether you’re calling about a new reservation or an existing trip — picking “existing” and keying in your confirmation code routes you faster.

A few specialty numbers worth knowing:

  • SkyMiles Member Services: 800-323-2323 (use for account questions, status challenges, or missing miles — faster than general reservations)
  • Group travel (10+): 800-532-4777 domestic, 800-337-4777 international, Mon-Fri 8am-8pm ET
  • Name corrections on existing bookings: 1-888-750-3284
  • Refunds and ticket credits: go through the refund form on delta.com first, 800-221-1212 only if that fails

Hold times on 800-221-1212 are usually 10 to 25 minutes on normal days. During a weather event or system outage, expect 45 minutes or more. SkyMiles Medallion members get priority queueing — dial in with your account number in the IVR to take advantage of it.

When the phone beats the website

For a simple Atlanta to Orlando round-trip, the phone is a waste of your time. Where it actually earns its place:

Multi-carrier award tickets. SkyMiles awards on SkyTeam partners — Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic — sometimes show no availability on delta.com when space exists. Agents can see partner inventory the public site hides, especially Delta One and business-class seats. This is the single best reason to call.

Stopovers and open-jaws. The website is built for round-trip and one-way. If you want ATL-AMS with a four-day stopover then AMS-ROM, or LAX into CDG and out of FCO, agents can book it as one ticket — which matters for baggage routing and irregular-operations protection.

Delta’s international fleet leans on the A330 and A350. If you’re booking a trans-Atlantic ticket, check the aircraft type before paying — the A330-900neo has the newer Delta One suites.

Unaccompanied minor and pet in cabin. Both require paperwork and a fee added to the booking. Doing it online is hit or miss. Call so you know it’s confirmed before you show up at the gate.

When the website chokes during IROPS. If Delta cancels your flight and the app shows you a rebooking that makes no sense — a 14-hour layover in Detroit when a nonstop leaves in 90 minutes — call. Agents can protect you on partner metal that the self-service tool won’t offer.

What to have ready

Before you dial:

  1. SkyMiles number. The IVR asks for it, and keying it in routes Medallions to a faster queue.
  2. Exact cities and dates. “ATL to LAX, 15 June out, 22 June back, flexible by one day either side.” Vague beats specific — agents can’t search your half-formed ideas.
  3. Credit card. Delta doesn’t offer 24-hour hold on phone bookings the way delta.com does for most fares. You pay on the call or you don’t get the ticket.
  4. Passport for international. Name as printed, number, expiry, country of issue. A typo here means a reissue later.
  5. Confirmation code if it’s an existing booking — six letters and digits, in any Delta email.

One opinion: don’t call on a Monday morning. It’s the worst queue of the week — everyone whose weekend travel went sideways is calling at once. Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon Pacific time is the quietest window, and Medallions get through in under 10 minutes.

Booking online — what’s actually worth using

The delta.com booking engine is genuinely good. A few things people miss:

The Flexible Dates view shows a calendar of prices for a month so you can see which days are cheapest. Click “My dates are flexible” before you search. On domestic routes, shifting by two days often halves the fare. Award tickets also have a calendar view — toggle “use miles” first, then flex the dates.

Delta’s Basic Economy fares come with real trade-offs. No seat selection until check-in, last boarding group, no upgrade eligibility even for Medallions on most of them, and a change fee if you actually need to change. If you’re reading the fare breakdown and the difference is $40 to main cabin, pay the $40. See Delta’s fare comparison page for the current rules.

The Fly Delta app does everything the site does, plus handles disruption better — the moment Delta cancels a flight, the app pushes alternate options before the phone lines even ring. Install it before you fly.

Book Delta-operated metal when possible. Codeshares with partners like KLM or Air France are fine, but issues at the gate get resolved faster when Delta is the operating carrier.
