Call 800-221-1212. When the voice bot asks what you need, say “representative” — or press 0, wait for the next prompt, press 0 again. That’s the reservations line, open 24/7, and it’s where every genuine Delta agent request eventually lands regardless of which sub-menu you poke at. SkyMiles members should have their number handy; typing it in during the IVR jumps you ahead of the generic queue. Messaging through the Fly Delta app is the other live-agent option and often clears faster than the phone on a busy day.

The number, and the trick to getting past the bot
Delta’s main reservations number is 800-221-1212. The automated system (“Ask Delta”) tries to handle things itself — it’ll ask if you want to check flight status, cancel, change, rebook. Most of those menus do work if your request is simple. But if you want a human, say “representative” or keep pressing 0 at each prompt until the voice gives up and routes you.
Other Delta numbers worth saving:
- SkyMiles Service: 800-323-2323 (24/7)
- Refunds: 800-847-0578
- International reservations: 800-241-4141
- Baggage (worldwide): 800-325-8224
- Accessibility: 404-209-3434 or dial 711 for relay
These are from Delta’s help centre contact page. If you google and land on a third-party page offering “Delta customer service 1-800-XXX-XXXX” with a number that doesn’t match these, it’s probably a travel agency or worse. Stick with the numbers above.
What the call actually looks like
The recorded greeting runs about 40 seconds before you can interact. Sit through it once, then start talking. If you say “representative,” you’ll get a confirmation question (“Is that what you want? Say yes or no.”) — answer yes, and you’re in the queue.
Hold times vary a lot. On a normal Tuesday or Wednesday, you’ll get an agent in 5-15 minutes. Mondays after a weekend of weather cancellations? I’ve waited 90 minutes. If the app or website is showing a specific flight as disrupted and you’re trying to call about it, you’re in a crowd — try messaging instead, the digital queue separates from the phone queue and often moves faster for that scenario.

Once you reach an agent, lead with the facts: confirmation number first, what you want second. “I’m on confirmation GKX7P2, flight DL 1245 to LGA tomorrow — it was just cancelled in the app, I need to rebook.” That gets to an answer. Long explanations about why you’re calling or how frustrated you are only delay things. The agents are pleasant, they do want to help, but they’re measuring calls per hour like every call centre on earth.
Messaging, app, and other live-human channels
The Fly Delta app has a chat bubble that connects you to the same live agent pool as the phone — often faster during disruption. Your conversation persists, so you don’t lose context if you close the app. For a routine date change or a fee question, message it. The only thing messaging can’t do well is urgent same-day rebooks involving multiple itinerary pieces; those benefit from voice.
Delta also supports WhatsApp messaging at +1-855-957-7433 and Apple Messages through the help page. Same agent pool again, just a different entry point. If your phone is glitchy or you’re on wifi abroad, WhatsApp is reliable.
For Medallion and Reserve cardholders, the dedicated elite lines (printed on the back of your SkyMiles card or in your account) have much shorter waits — that’s one of the few genuinely useful elite perks. Diamond and 360° members essentially never hold.
Traps worth knowing
Basic Economy tickets can’t be changed or cancelled for credit after the 24-hour window, and agents cannot waive that rule. Don’t spend 40 minutes on hold trying to change a Basic Economy — the answer will be no. If you need flexibility, Main Cabin or above is what you want from the start.
Refunds go through a separate team with its own backlog. If you’re owed money for a Delta-initiated cancellation, the refund team (800-847-0578) is the right channel, not general reservations. The refund form at delta.com/refund is a parallel path — filing online creates a case number that reservations agents can’t always access, so don’t file online and then call about the same thing or you’ll confuse the system.

One thing that genuinely speeds up a call: know your flight number. Not your confirmation, your actual flight number (DL 1245 not “the 3pm to LaGuardia”). Agents search by flight number in the ops screens, and giving it upfront cuts 2-3 minutes off every call.
