Book Spirit online if you possibly can. The reservations line is 855-728-3555, runs 24/7, and is the same number used for WhatsApp and SMS (text “Hello” to the same digits). Here’s the catch with Spirit: the airline doesn’t publicise a phone booking surcharge, but every service they sell bundles fees on top of the base fare, so the ticket quoted by phone is almost always higher than the one on spirit.com. If you want the cheapest fare, book online and add what you need. Call only when you have to.

The numbers and channels
Main reservations: 855-728-3555, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This line handles new bookings, changes, cancellations, and everything in between. The same number works over WhatsApp and SMS — text “Hello” to 855-728-3555 or to shortcode 48763 for message-based support.
A few other numbers and channels:
- Spirit Vacations (flight + hotel packages): 1-877-377-0791
- From Mexico: 800-030-0071
- Chat: spirit.com/contact-us opens a live chat window during business hours — often faster than phone
- Text/WhatsApp to 48763 or 855-728-3555: for booking and existing-reservation questions
Hold times on the main line are long — 30 to 60 minutes is typical, longer after weather events. Spirit’s agents also frequently work from overseas call centres, and the call quality varies. The chat and WhatsApp channels are genuinely quicker for most simple questions and avoid the phone queue entirely. Use them.
The bare-fare reality before you book
Spirit’s business model is unbundled fares. The number you see on the homepage covers you, a small personal item that fits under the seat, and the seat itself assigned at check-in. That’s it. Everything else is extra:
- Carry-on bag: $46-$79 depending on when you add it — cheaper online during initial booking, most expensive at the gate
- First checked bag: $37-$70, same escalator
- Seat selection: $5-$50 depending on seat and route
- Change fee: $69-$119 depending on how far out, plus fare difference (except Spirit First and Premium Economy, which are fee-free on changes)
- Boarding-pass printing at the airport: $2 if you don’t use the kiosk or app
None of this is hidden, but it’s easy to book a $49 fare and end up with a $180 total once you add a bag and a seat. The math only works if you actually fly with a personal item and nothing else. If you need bags or a specific seat, check Spirit’s total against a legacy carrier’s main cabin fare — sometimes the price ends up within $20, and the legacy carrier gets you a free carry-on and water.

When to call
For most routine bookings and changes, spirit.com or the app is cheaper, faster, and less frustrating than the phone. Use the phone or chat when:
Your itinerary involves a schedule change. Spirit moves flights around more than most airlines, and when they do, you’re sometimes entitled to a free rebooking or refund. The website won’t surface this — chat or phone is the path.
You need to add a service animal, oxygen, or a mobility device. The online self-service tool is limited. Call 855-728-3555 and push for the accessibility team.
You’ve already cancelled and need to use a Spirit credit. Reservation credits (RCs) can be fussy to apply online, especially combining them with new cash purchases. Phone or chat handles it more reliably.
Group travel of 10 or more. Call reservations and ask for the group desk — groups get dedicated pricing the public site won’t show.
Honest opinion: if you’re calling about a delay, cancellation, or compensation request, temper expectations. Spirit’s customer service scores near the bottom of US airline rankings, and the answer to most compensation requests is “no, this is what our contract of carriage says.” That’s not the agent being unhelpful — it’s the airline’s policy. Keep calls short, specific, and polite.
What to have ready
Before you dial or text:
- Confirmation code if it’s an existing booking — six characters in any Spirit email.
- The exact fare you’re expecting. Screenshot the spirit.com fare before calling so you can point out if the phone quote is higher. Agents sometimes don’t match online-only promotions.
- Free Spirit account number. You can’t earn miles retroactively if you book without it on the record.
- Credit card. Paid during the call.
- Patience. Scripted agents, sometimes a language barrier. State the issue clearly once, repeat it if needed, don’t escalate unless the agent is genuinely stuck.
See Spirit’s contact-us page for the current full channel list — it rotates when they add new text/WhatsApp features.
