How Can You Get a Refund From Volaris? 24-Hour Rule, Form, and Travel Credit

Getting a refund from Volaris depends on one clock and one choice. The clock: did you book in the last 24 hours, and is departure more than 7 days out? If yes, you have a hard legal right to a full refund under US DOT rules. The choice: cash back to your original payment method, or Volaris travel credit (usually with a small bonus). Everything else — the form, the call center, the Manage My Trip flow — is just execution. Here’s how each path actually works.

The 24-hour rule is your best friend

The US Department of Transportation requires airlines selling tickets to or from the US to offer a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, provided the flight departs at least 7 days out. Volaris honors this. It’s not a special promo — it’s federal rule 14 CFR 259.5. Mexican-law tickets get covered too when the itinerary touches a US airport.

The catch most people miss: the 24-hour window runs from the timestamp on your confirmation email, not midnight of the day you booked. So if you booked at 11 PM Tuesday, you have until 11 PM Wednesday. Set a phone alarm if you’re hesitating. Once that window closes, you’re in standard-rules territory, which is much stricter.

To use the 24-hour window, go to Manage My Trip on volaris.com, enter your reservation code and last name, and look for the “cancel reservation” option. The system should offer you full refund to original payment method — debit card, credit card, or PayPal. Screenshot the confirmation page. Refunds typically post within 7-20 business days depending on your card issuer.

Outside the 24-hour window

Once you’re past 24 hours, what you get back depends entirely on the fare class you bought. Volaris’s cheapest Clean Fare doesn’t include any refund entitlement outside the DOT window — you cancel, you lose the money (minus any mandatory taxes and fees Volaris must refund by law). The middle-tier Plus fare allows a change with a fee. VClub members and Combo Plus/Premium fares have broader change and refund flexibility.

A few specific cases override fare rules. If Volaris cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change (2+ hours), you’re entitled to a full refund regardless of fare class — this is also DOT rule, not Volaris generosity. If you’re denied boarding due to overbooking, same thing plus compensation. If you have a documented medical reason you can’t travel, Volaris sometimes waives change fees on compassionate grounds, but you’ll need a call-center rep to process that.

My opinion: if you bought Clean Fare and your plans changed more than 24 hours after booking, don’t bother with the refund form. It’s going to come back auto-rejected. Take the travel credit if offered, or write off the ticket.

Cash refund vs travel credit

Volaris routinely offers travel credit as an alternative to cash refunds, sometimes with a 10-15% bonus on top. The credit sits in your Volaris account and has to be used within 12 months of issue on a new booking in the same passenger’s name.

Travel credit is a better deal than cash only if three things are true: you actually fly Volaris regularly, your travel plans within 12 months are certain, and the bonus is meaningful. If any of those is uncertain, take the cash. Credits expire. People forget. The 10% bonus is meaningless if the credit disappears before you book the next trip.

One thing to watch: if you’re offered “electronic credit” as part of a DOT-mandated refund for a Volaris-initiated cancellation, you can refuse and demand cash. The airline is legally required to give you the payment method you requested. Don’t let a chat rep pressure you into credit when cash is your right.

Volaris’s online Manage My Trip handles most self-service refunds. If the page won’t let you cancel (common with tickets purchased through a travel agent or outside the Volaris site), you need to go via the contact channels on cms.volaris.com/en/travel-info/contact-us.

The agent will ask you to state your refund reason in one sentence — prepare that. “DOT 24-hour rule” or “Volaris-initiated schedule change of 3 hours” gets fast processing. Vague reasons get transferred.
